My brain works in weird ways, so when I opened my fridge last night and reached for a bottle of Schlafly American IPA it didn’t surprise me in the least that the Hulk Hogan “I Am a Real American” theme song popped in my head.   I channeled my inner Hulkster as I ripped the cap off and prepared myself, sans bandana, to enjoy my beer.  With the Independence Day holiday weekend coming up, this review might want to make you do the same.

It poured with a great, golden color and a delicious, citrusy aroma.  The one finger head dissipated fairly quickly, but any apprehension I had about that faded away as I took my first sip.  This is a delectable summer beer, and for someone like myself who isn’t a super big hop head, it was delightfully well-balanced.  This beer drinks so smoothly, with the hop bitterness hitting you on the back of your tongue, but by that time you’re already prepared for another sip.  The Schlafly American IPA is the type of beer that you can picture yourself enjoying at a cookout or hanging out with your friends on the lake; it transports you mentally to these summertime activities.

Beeradvocate.com recommends pairing the American IPA with peppery or sharp cheeses such as Monterey, Pepper Jack, Blue Cheese, or Cheddar, and with meats like poultry, fish, or shellfish.  It clocks in at 7.2% ABV and 65 IBUs, but drinks so much lighter you can be deceived.  This brew ranks right up there with the Three Floyds Gumballhead as one of the more well-balanced, hoppier beers that I can picture drinking on a hot day.  As far as rankings go, if you want to put stock into those types of things, Ratebeer.com gives the American IPA a strong 98 and Beeradvocate.com chimes in with an A-.  This beer is flavored with the American hops Amarillo, Centennial and Simcoe, from the beautiful Pacific Northwest, and will surely make you proud to be an American as well; enjoy one this Fourth of July and maybe you too will find yourself thinking of the Hulkster’s theme song…I’ll help by putting the tune in your head. You’re welcome.

Anxious, sleepless time on Gaza ship, but it’s not my safety I fear for

The crew and passengers of the MV Saoirse all huddled into the living space at the back of our cruiser boat last night.

We were there for a live link-up with the hundreds that attended the Let Them Sail march in Dublin.

The rally was organised to show support for the upcoming flotilla to Gaza and to call for the safe passage of all the boats, amid increasing threats and attempts to stop them from sailing. As we heard some of the cheers echo through the phone from Dublin, there were tears on board.

Since my arrival here in the Mediterranean last Thursday, it has been an emotional time. The initial happiness at meeting up with my fellow passengers on board the MV Saoirse was overwhelming. After weeks of nervous anticipation we were together now, united in the knowledge that our journey to Gaza had begun.

There was also huge pride at seeing our ship, the MV Saoirse, for the first time. The Irish tricolour flew high above her as we walked aboard.

But there has also been a degree of frustration. Unfortunately the departure of the flotilla has been delayed. This has primarily been because of pressure put on the Greek authorities by the Israeli and US governments. An Israeli group — the Israel Law Centre — has lodged a complaint against the American ship — The Audacity of Hope — and has consequently put back our leaving. There have also been threats made against the flotilla by Israeli representatives, supported by Hillary Clinton, saying violence will be used to stop our passage, if necessary.

It was also an anxious time personally, as customs officials delayed the delivery of the rugby gear that had been donated by the Leinster squad and my home club of Nenagh. I struggled to sleep, worrying that the cargo would not make it in time.

But the stress was finally resolved after days of phone calls and letters from various embassies and the IRFU. The hope that, through sport, we can help build on the strong links between Ireland and Gaza is still alive.

The arrival of the gear helped the already strong morale within the group. Any frustration at outside events is vented through the knowledge that our aims are just and that we can help make a difference to a society and economy that has been cut off from the outside world for the past five years. We are confident that we will meet with the other ships of the flotilla in the coming days.

Despite the high morale on board, it has been disappointing to read uninformed criticism of the flotilla. These statements, from the likes of Cllr Richard Humphries, Ruth Dudley Edwards and Alan Shatter are endangering our safety and giving the Israel military, licence to act as they please.

But it is not just about endangering our safety. These critics fail to realise that supporting the people of Gaza — 80pc of whom are dependent on aid to survive — does not equate to an attack on the people of Israel. It is time to end this commentary of hatred and bitterness that implies reaching out to the people of Palestine automatically means attacking the people of Israel. It does not. The people of Gaza are our fellow human beings and do not deserve to be collectively punished and placed under a smothering blockade.

At the end of our link-up last night with the people of Dublin, I read out a poem by Palestinian writer Mahmoud Darwish.

A line in this poem, called I Come From There, captures the humanity of the people of Palestine, which the passengers of this flotilla and flotillas in the future, will never forget…

The case of a man accused of killing his wife and dumping her body near Estacada in 2008 is now in the hands of the jury.

In closing arguments today, prosecutors argued Brian Cole strangled his wife, Heather Mallory.

A year ago this week, a timber worker accidentally found Mallory’s body in a forest. Along with her remains in a duffel bag, authorities found her identification, clothing, her son’s bath toy and a bent towel bar from the couple’s bathroom.

Prosecutors have used those items to tie Cole to the death.
“Brian Cole knows that that piece of evidence buries him. He knows that that towel bar absolutely damns him,” said Deputy District Attorney Jenna Plank.

The defense conceded that Cole had struck his wife once and that she secured a restraining order, which was later removed. Both sides acknowledged Mallory was having affair with another man in the months before her death.

The defense attorney reminded the jury there was no DNA, finger prints or other direct evidence linking Cole to the skeleton in the duffel bag.

“Brian Cole is not guilty,” said defense attorney Russell Barnett.
After the case went to the jury, Mallory’s parents reiterated the painful conclusion they reached more than three years and three months ago.

“It’s been very difficult not having a daughter and the pain that Mr. Cole has charged to my son, my wife and myself,” said Steve Mallory, the victim’s father.
After closing arguments, Mallory’s parents went home to Washington, where their now 7-year-old grandson is being cared for in their home.

As part of the program’s requirement, Runge had to attend a number of homeownership classes that focus on a variety of topics, from budgeting to home maintenance. She also must prove ownership of a checklist of tools and a toolbox, a lawn mower, snow shovel, garden hose, rake and other items to maintain their property.

The house itself was built in Lawrence by students enrolled in the Van Buren County Intermediate School District’s construction-trades class.
Runge said she visited the workshop a few times and was impressed with the workmanship and pride the students showed in their work.

“It was a neat bonding experience … they got to see who would be living in the house and I got to see the people behind the work that went into it,” Runge said. “I got to pick the siding and the shingles. We tweaked the laundry room because I decided to put the washer and dryer in the basement, so we turned the laundry room into a pantry.”

Runge said she also as able to pick the lot on which the house would be placed, a 100-by-160-foot corner parcel donated by the family who owns the house to the north.

Kalamazoo Valley Habitat for Humanity provides houses for about seven families per year, also overseeing a house-rehab program as well as new construction.

“It’s our fifth year with the Van Buren County ISD and every year that move from Lawrence and (house placement at) the final location is pretty amazing to watch,” Jones said. “Many, many donors make dreams like this become a reality and we’re really appreciative of the partnerships we’ve established through the years.
